The list of passers of the CPA board exam conducted this May was released yesterday May 29, 2017.
University of San Carlos (USC) secured most of the top 10 slots. There are two first placers, both are graduates of USC, and they happened to be second degrees cousins too. Congratulations!!!
At the heel of the result unveiling, a lot of Filipinos, especially Visayan and Mindanaoan are asking what happened to UP, why no students in the top ten. Some even believes it’s the UP students penchant for “rally” that made them absent from the top slots.
[Thanks to reader lance for pointing out PUP Sta Mesa, a Manila-based school made it to top ten. There is another one Dr Filemon Aguilar Memorial College in Las Pinas City].
For those unaware, the Philippine Professional Regulation Commission or PRC conducts two round of CPA board exams every year. For this year, the first exam schedules for the board exam for CPA was last May 14, 15, 21, and 22, 2017. The second round of CPA board exam schedules will be this coming October 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2017.
Many Manila based schools, including the University of the Philippines, normally have their students take the CPA board exam during the OCTOBER schedule.
Reason: UP, their school year starts August and ends in May, the graduation is June. Their students couldn’t possibly take the May CPA board since they have not graduated yet. UNLESS, the government will allow special privilege to make UP undergrad take the May schedule of CPA board exam even before they graduate. But would you approve that?
OCTOBER 2016 CPA board – 5,249 out of 14,390 examinees passed = 36.48% passing rate national
There are those who failed the October exam, who will retake the CPA board exam come May, the following year. Those who failed the May exam, can choose to retake in October of the same year, or in any other subsequent schedule set by PRC.
This is the TOP TEN ranking of the October 2016 CPA Board Exam, the top placers are dominated by Manila and Luzon schools, only 1 top ten entry from Visayas coming from UP Visayas Tacloban.
Below is the TOP TEN ranking of the May 2017 CPA Board Exam, the top placers are dominated by Visayas schools, particularly USC of Cebu.
SCHOOL PERFORMANCE
For the MAY 2017 CPA result, the top 3 performing schools with 50 or more examinees and with at least 80% passing percentage are the following:
- University of San Carlos with 66 passers out of 70 exam takers, passing percentage of 94.29%
- De La Salle University – Manila with 79 passers out of 92 exam takers, passing percentage of 85.87%
- Ateneo de Naga University with 53 passers out of 66 exam takers, passing percentage of 80.30%.
For the OCTOBER 2016 CPA result, the top performing schools with 50 or more examinees and with at least 80% passing percentage are the following:
If you notice, 100% passing rate for University of the Philippines exam takers for the October 2016 CPA board exam. So for those who believes that tax payers money are wasted because no UP student made the Top Ten CPA board exam passer for May 2017, this research should shed some light to it.
Meanwhile on social media, some of the unwarranted attack on UP students for not landing in the top ten:
UP graduation is set June of every year, that’s why their graduates takes the October schedule, and not the May schedule.
Congratulations to all board passers and new Certified Public Accountants.

check out the facts. yes its true up only has 4 takers. UST has 110 takers, DLSU 92 takers. USC has only 70 takers yet they managed to produced 6 places including 2 first placers tied both are cousins. Check out the passing percentage of UST and DLSU they are really low compared to usc.
lance says
Not so good in research. PUP is a Manila school, isn’t?
iSensey says
Thank you lance for pointing that out, iSensey stand corrected.
For the major point of this post, check the second to the last paragraph on UP. Salamat!

The fact that UST AND DLSU fielded more candidates than USC, it is expected that topnotchers from these schools should emerge. UST and DLSU are two of the big 4 universities in Manila. Hindi valid ang rason dito. Talo talaga sila.
iSensey says
Your point is valid. October 2017 exam is upcoming, so we will see how UP and the rest will perform then. For now this is the data on on school performance October 2016 versus May 2017 CPA board exams.

MAY 2017 CPA BOARD EXAM PERFORMANCE – DLSU, UP, USC, UST

Yes true UP last year was 100% but only manage to produce only two topnotchers number 8 & 10 out of 69 candidates. UST fielded most candidates 300plus last OCT 2016 yet only produced 5 topnothcers and DLSU only produced 2. Mas mabuti pa ang PUP hindi part ng 4 naka 3 pang topnotchers.
iSensey says
You stated the facts as seen on the October screenshot above, but remarkably absent from your commentary is the fact that USC did not produce any topnotcher from the Oct board. In any case, everyone will agree that USC is doing a great job on their accountancy course especially with the recent cpa board result.
This post, in case you are unaware, is mostly about UP and the (undeserved) hate and bashing this institution is getting as a result of the May 2017 board.
JAO says
The reason given doesn’t hold water. They took the last bar exam at the same time.

Konti lang ang magtake ng USC during October mostly repeaters kasi usually first timers nila pumapasa May. In the same case for UP konti lang kapag May sa kanila. For your infor im a CPA grad of USC and had my Masters in UP Cebu. Peace. I know UP is a very good school but we in the provinces are catching up kung baga kami ang value meal sa mga eskwelahan imagine a 40k a semester cost in USC, delivering a high quality comparable to UST or DLSU or even better. Affordable ang tuition namin compared sa staggering 150 to 200k a sem nila. Value meal talaga kami sa USC.
totoy says
Hello. I’m from UST I just want to inform you that the May CPA board exam takers from UST, based on what you said, are also “repeaters”. Though this doesn’t change the fact that some still failed the actual board. Also, one semester in UST cost roughly 50k not a staggering 150k-200k.
bisdak_ taga Cebu says
It seems kulang ka sa research mo UST has 76 first timers and only 34 retakers and DLSU has 83 first timers and 9 retakers. Still way more than USC’s 66 first timers and 4 retakers. Yung title ng article mo na obviously BOKYA and highly opinionated has a overly defensive sour graping Imperialistic Manila superiority complex CONNOTATION. As you said UP has undeserved BASHING, eh bakit nasali ang STO TOMAS, de la salle, AND OTHER MANILA SCHOOLS na hindi mo naman na JUSTIFY bakit hindi sila nag TOP. When in truth rin mayroon ring PUP at Las Pinas School na nagtop. Learning experience po. Bago mag post ng article dapat maging objective and mag research ng mabuti. PEACE.

Dear, you need to learn more about website marketing and promotion. 😀 and fyi, this is not a news website, hence, the opinion. 😀
bisdak taga Cebu says
Ok. I understand this just to entice people to visit your website. Ang payo ko lang be very objective as possible kasi it seems the title of your article is more speculative iba kasi ang dating for probinsyanos like me. Alam ko sa marketing kailangan mo maging credible and very objective para balik balikan ka ng netizens and lalo tataas ang mga hits at visits mo. . I’m am not arguing about UP’s excellence, magaling talaga ang UP but with the advent of internet technology, schools in provinces are fast catching up. UP now is not as dominant as before kung TOP NOTCHERS ang pag uusan, as there are more schools putting up the challenge, like USC, Silliman, Addu and XU Cagayan de oro. Yun lang po. Peace.
iSensey says
If we had wanted more eyes on this article, we would have zeroed in on UP alone on the title since it is UP that’s getting the brunt of the bashing and hate. The people’s interest is in UP, not in any other school over the cpa board exam result – social media is overridden with ‘kasi rally ng rally, asan na ang UP, etc. Anyhow, marketing is more on leveraging emotions and feelings over reason and objectivity, but hey, that is another topic, and we are digressing from the subject.
USC is a great school, in fact, we have had two contributors from USC who have written commissioned posts on another site in our web network (one passed the ECE board after first try, the other passed the Architecture board on the first try) so yes, we are aware that San Carlos is an excellent school.
As for UP, we will all find out how their students will fare come October cpa board, if they’ll have top ten passers, or if they’ll maintain the 100% passing rate, or both, or none.
And thanks for leaving comments, discussion is always welcome in iSensey.

USC is very underrated. Here in Cebu, the only recognized Center of Development for Accountancy is USJR, but if you look at the CPA board results, linampaso ang USJR in terms of passing percentange as well as in the topnotchers. Linampaso pa ang UST at De la Salle (recognized as Center of Excellence in Accountancy) sa last May 2017 CPA board exam results in terms (passing rate and number of topnotchers). USC is only ranked 8th and the last school of the Philippines to be in the QS Asian Rankings, well below than Manila’s big 4 universities ranking and even below the provincial Silliman, Addu and XU. Kung baga ang USC is a dark horse sa carrera, the biblical David trouncing the Goliath. That prompted me to pursue a Masters at UP Cebu. Naalala ko rin dati kasamahan kung na officer sa Banko, nilalaet ang honor graduate sa USC bakit binigyan opportunity for officership she was so proud to be a graduate of PSBA Manila. Nasaan naba bang PSBA Manila ngayon sa CPA ranking di ba pinulot sa kangkongan? USC’s rise is the typical Cinderella Story. And I expect more Licensure results USC being a dark horse, biblical David trouncing the Goliaths.

And yes, it doesn’t matter who landed in Top 10. The only privilege they will get is more job offers, and bragging rights. UP has been a consistent TOP PERFORMING SCHOOL (I need to emphasize that) in the CPA Board Exam and they produce graduates that is not only capable but competent as well. Thanks.
bisdak_ taga Cebu says
parang sineswerte ang USC ngayong kalalabas lang ng CHEMICAL ENGINEERING BOARD EXAM RESULT AT NUMBER 1 RIN ang USC.
Albert says
depende sa course – architecture exam january 2017 4 topnotchers UP top 1,2,3, at 5. UST 3 nag top ten, USC 1.
Bisdak taga_cebu says
Lumabas na oct result ng cpa. Anong nangyari sa dlsu zero topnotcher pa rin inspite fielding more than one hundred candidates. Yung usc na may 9 takers lang karamihan retakers naka top10 pa. Dlsu is overrated school
