How To Insert Adsense Code Into A WordPress Blog Using Plugin

how to insert ads in wordpress

After generating your Adsense code, you now need to place this in your blog or website so you can start showing ads and earn.

*This tutorial is for those who are using WordPress with own hosting. Please see other websites to know how to insert ads in blogspot blogs.

There are different ways to insert the Google Adsense codes into your website, (1) using a WordPress plugin (2) manual insertion of codes, or (3) combination of manual and WP plugin.

When it comes to Adsense plugins for WordPress, most of our blogger friends uses either Ad Inserter or Quick Adsense. iSensey is using Ad Inserter to make placing ad units faster and more convenient.

For new bloggers especially non-techie, we advise that you use an Adsense wordpress plugin in inserting ads. But if you know a bit about coding and editing php files, going into the source code, then manual insertion maybe the best route for your site.

Related Tutorial: How To Generate Adsense Codes

iSensey will focus this tutorial on the Ad Inserter WP Plugin since this is what we are using on this site in inserting ads above the post title (shown on home page, category, archive) and inside the single post (hidden in other location). We are using manual placement for the ads you see on our sidebar.

You can experiment with your own ad layout position. Go for the placement and ad type that gives you the biggest buck per click.

If you are targeting readers from the Philippines, the cpc or cost per click is very low at average of 0.01 to 0.07. You need massive traffic landing on your blog before you can earn a decent amount. Highest cpc we’ve experienced from PH traffic was 0.10 but that rarely happens.
*For ad type, we usually use the responsive ad units and ‘text /image’ ad types, and responsive link units.

Before we get to the nitty gritty of things, first, check the current ad layout position and placement set-up of iSensey.

MANUAL AD PLACEMENT IN SIDEBAR

All ads that you see on the sidebar of iSensey are manually placed. How? Go to your WordPress dashboard >>> Appearance > Widget > Custom HTML Widget (recommended) or Text Widget

Drag the CUSTOM HTML widget into your desired position in the sidebar. Paste in your ad code. Alternative, you can also use TEXT widget  and then paste in “text” view (not ‘visual’ view). The CUSTOM HTML is newly added by WordPress this August 2017 if I am not mistaken.

Make sure to add visibility rule if you don’t want to show the ad in certain location, or you want to show the ad only in select location.

This is sample using TEXT widget. Then if you don’t want to show the ad unit in a certain location, create a Visibility Rule.

Insert Adsense Code in Widget Sidebar

Example A: The ad unit must not show up if the reader loads any page – so you will HIDE if page is “page” under post type.

Example B: The ad unit must now show up if the reader loads a post or any page – so you will create rules. Like this one on the sample screenshot:

wordpress widget visibility rule

If you want the ad unit to display wherever on your WordPress site, then do not touch the widget visibility option.

Tip: Google prohibits showing any Adsense ads in post or pages that does not give added value to readers. That’s why all our ad units are HIDDEN in our pages. What are our pages? We only have 3 pages on our website, Contact | About page, Disclosure page, and Privacy Policy page. You can’t see any ads there, you can visit these pages to verify.

Using Adsense WordPress Plugin AD INSERTER

Phase One

We like to use Ad Inserter in our sites over any other WordPress adsense plugins.  To use this, login to your wp dashboard. Then go to Plugins then Add New Plugin. Then search for the plugin using keyword “Ad Inserter” by Igor Funa. When you see it, click Install. Then click Activate.

You are now ready to set-up your ads using Ad Inserter.

Note: From time to time check how your ads appear on your live website. Sometimes plugin developers and authors makes changes or updates to their plugin that may cause some issue with your current set-up.

Phase Two

Access the Ad Inserter Settings by going to your wp dashboard then Settings then Ad Inserter

This is how we usually set-up the ads, these placements gives us the highest earnings.

Slot 1: Inside Post after paragraph 2 counting from TOP. The ad layout position will be “Center”. See the set-up:

Ad Inserter setting for single post

Slot 2: Inside post after the last paragraph, default position. See the set-up:

Ad Inserter plugin set up inside post

Slot 3: Middle of post, float left position, after 16th paragraph, provided article contents at least 30 paragraphs. See the set-up:

insert adsense ads inside post

*Pictures are counted as 1 paragraph.

You can also use Ad Inserter to insert ad unit above the title, that will appear if reader loads the homepage, a category page, search page, and archive page. We made this unit not to appear if a reader loads a post. You can explore our website if you want to see these ads in action.

This will be the setting, make sure to use responsive ad “auto” since big ads are not allowed above the fold. *Sometimes, we use mobile large banner ad unit instead of responsive ad for above the title placement.

insert ad above title

*Put a <br> code to have one space after the ad. This way accidental clicking is avoided, and you avoid invalid clicks deduction in your finalized earnings.

Notice that some ads are set in such a way that it will only appear on a single post, or it will appear on homepage – category – archive – but not on single post.

Sponsored Links or Advertisements Labels

This is the code we use to show a tag or label above an ad that says “Sponsored Post”.  <div style=’font-size:9.5px;color:#000000;margin-bottom:2px’>Sponsored Links</div>insertyouradsensecode

Hope this adsense ad placement tutorial helps you!

To be honest: Why should I use an ad manager which limits the number of different ads I can create with to push its pro version? I recommend alternative products like Advanced Ads, WPads or AdRotate for the same mission, because 16 diffferent ads are not enough for my setups.

Thank you Trevor for that insight and the recommendation.
