Qualified female members of the Social Security System or SSS may get up to P70,000 for maternity benefit for normal and Ceasarean delivery. The maximum benefit is P40,000 for Miscarriage. This is after the Expanded Maternity Leave took into effect last March 11, 2019.
The processing and evaluation of SSS Maternity Benefit application is 10 to 30 working days (except Saturdays / Sundays / Holidays), and may be extended if the documents filed by the member is lacking during time of submission.
If you are a Voluntary / Self-Employed SSS member then the benefit will be sent to your bank account, this will entail additional 7 to 10 working days for processing.

WHEN IS THE NEW MATERNITY BENEFIT EFFECTIVE?
The effectivity of the Expanded Maternity Leave Law starts March 11, 2019. Normal and Ceasarean delivery will get 105 days of paid leave, while those who suffered miscarriage or emergency termination of pregnancy will get 60 days of paid leave.
If you gave birth before March 11 this year, then the SSS benefit you will enjoy is the old one.
The new law grants maternity leave to qualified female worker in every instance of pregnancy, miscarriage or emergency termination of pregnancy regardless of frequency. Sa dating rules, hanggang 4 na panganganak / miscarriage lang ang puede sa maternity benefit. With the new law Expanded Maternity Benefit of 2019, kahit ilang beses manganganak makakacover na ang mga qualified female SSS members.
HOW TO COMPUTE THE SSS MATERNITY LEAVE BENEFIT?
For the computation of the Maternity Benefit under the Expanded Maternity Law, the Social Security System qualified female member may follow this guide to compute for the amount of benefit that she will get:
1. First, exclude the semester of birth or miscarriage.
Example 1: If nanganak ka ng May 2019, wag isali sa computation ang naihulog sa SSS from January to June 2019.
Example 2: If you gave birth last July 2019, you will not include in the benefit computation from April 2019 to September 2019.
Example 3: If you will give birth this coming November 2019, you will not include in the computation from July 2019 to December 2019.
***Semester counting is the present quarter + the previous quarter.
2. Second, choose the 6 months with the highest salary credits within the 12-months period before the semester of birth or miscarriage.
Example: Nanganak ka ng May 2019.
Ang salary monthly credit mo are as follows:
*January to June 2019: Hindi kasama sa kwenta ang months na to kasi eto ang semester of birth/miscarriage.
- January 2018 – P10,000
- February 2018 – P10,000
- March 2018 – P10,000
- April 2018 – P9,000
- May 2018 – P9,000
- June 2018 – P9,000
- July 2018 – P9,000
- August 2018 – P9,000
- September 2018 – P9,000
- October 2018 – P9,000
- November 2018 – P9,000
- December 2018 – P9,000
As of 2019, the highest or maximum monthly salary credit or MSC is P20,000.
This is the latest SSS Contribution Table for 2019, you can see therein the monthly salary credit range. If you know the amount of contribution you pay to SSS on a month to month basis then you can easily spot the corresponding ‘monthly salary credit’ of your contribution.
If Employed = total contribution is your share plus your employer’s share
If Self-Employed or Voluntary = the amount you pay to SSS
You will then choose the 6 highest contributions from the 12-months period preceding the semester of birth or miscarriage. In our example, the 6 months with the highest salary credits are:
- January 2018 – P10,000
- February 2018 – P10,000
- March 2018 – P10,000
- December 2018 – P9,000
- November 2018 – P9,000
- October 2018 – P9,000
TOTAL P57,000
3. Third, divide the total from Step 2 above with 180 so you will get the Average Daily Salary Credit (ADSC).
In our example the total is P57,000 / 180 = P316.67 is the ADSC
4. Fourth, multiply the ADSC by 105 days if you gave birth normally or via Caesarean section.
P316.67 x 105 days = P33,250.35
And there you have it! That’s how to compute how much you’ll get from SSS when you give birth.
For miscarriage, the number of days that you’ll use to multiply in the fourth step is 60 days (not 105 days).
HOW TO GET THE MAXIMUM P70,000 SSS MATERNITY BENEFIT
If you want to get the P70,000 maximum maternity benefit offered by SSS, then your monthly salary credit must also be the maximum MSC for at least 6 months from the 12-months period preceding the semester of birth.
The maximum right now is P20,000 MSC, this corresponds to a monthly salary from your company (for employed) or as declared income (for self-employed voluntary) at P19,750 and above. You must then be contributing to SSS monthly at P2,430.
To demo: The female member gave birth July 2019. Excluded in the computation are MSCs from the months April to September 2019. Included in the computation are months April 2018 to March 2019. Our assumption is that this member pays SSS the maximum contribution of P2,430 every month from April 2018 to March 2019, so her MSC is P20,000.
P20,000 MSC x 6 months = P120,000
Her ADSC or Average Daily Salary Credits is P120,000 / 180 days = P666.67
ADSC P666.67 x 105 days = P70,000.35
Our sample SSS female member will then get the maximum benefit for maternity claim at P70,000.
