Who would have thought that just as you are creating dark scenarios in your head, of you being held at knife or gun point in the Grab car you are riding on, of you being accosted, and worst, injured by a taxi driver executing a modus, but the reality is something wonderful? Something that wins respect and admiration?
This is the story that’s making the rounds on social media today, that of the kindness and generosity of one Grab driver, Carlo Santiago Diaz, his girlfriend, and his group.
This story was shared by Gelica Manuel Tuluan on her Facebook account. Ms Gelica was on her way home late at night, after dropping her friend in Tondo, they proceeded to her address. As they were navigating Roxas Bldv, the driver murmurs something that she didn’t fully catch. All of a sudden, the car stopped and pulled in a dimly lit section of Roxas boulevard.
What is she to think? What will you think?
Having read horror stories of taxi modus operandi, she jumped to conclusions in her head. She was frantically calling her friend, willing this friend to pick up the phone so she can ask for help. As the phone was ringing, and her heart was racing of a possible hold-up, she finally observed what was happening in the side street. Carlo approached an old lady who was lying on the street, gave her a brown bag, chat with the lady a bit, then went back to the Grab car he was driving.
After a few moments of being in the road again, Tuluan asked Diaz what really happened there? Diaz explained that he, his girlfriend, and friends regularly chip-in money so they can cook something and bring this to the homeless that abound in Manila’s streets. Sometimes too, their group will be bringing used clothes because these street dwellers need them especially when the nights get chilly.
If that doesn’t warm your heart, listen to what Carlo Diaz has to say about waiting for the government to act to address our society’s problems. The message he conveyed will definitely make you proud that young men and women such as him and his friends, feels for the less fortunate on our streets. And not only they empathize, but they ACT ON IT. The bring actual help where they can!
