5-Years Expiry for Driver’s License and Car Plates Signed!

Drivers and car owners rejoice for here now is the much awaited validity extension of the driver licenses and car plates – from 3 years to 5 years!

Secretary Tugade of the Transportation Department shared that he has signed the directive for the license and car plates validity extension to 5 years yesterday, September 19. This was shared during Secretary Tugade’s talk at the MOPC Transportation forum earlier.

5 Years Drivers License and Car Plates Validity

Effectivity date is set this October 2016 for Metro Manila and NCR, then shortly after this new rule on driver’s license expiration will roll out nationwide.

BENEFITS of the 5 Year Validity Extension of Driver’s License and Car Plates

  1. This means money savings for those who will apply for a new driver’s license and car plates, as well as those who are up for renewal. Please see the demo computation provided below. *Not to mention savings on transport cost in going to the LTO office!
  2. Less effort spent because instead of going to the LTO to renew license or car plates every 3 years, it is now every 5 years.

FIRST TIME APPLICANT

Prior to this new directive, the driver’s license fee including computer fee and application fee for first time applicant is P585.26 for Non-Professional and Professional License which is good for 3 years.  The yearly cost of the newly issued driver’s license is P195.09.

With the 5 years’ expiry for the license, the yearly cost now is reduced from P195.09 to P150.53.

OLD fee = P585.26/3 years = P195.09 per year for 3 years

NEW fee = P752.63/5 years = P150.53 per year for 5 years

This is a yearly savings of P44.56!

DRIVER’S LICENSE RENEWAL FEE

For those who will be renewing their Non-Professional and Professional licenses, the old drivers’ fee is P417.63, good for 3 years.

OLD fee = P417.63 / 3 years = P139.21 per year for 3 years

NEW fee = P652.63 / 5 years = P130.53 per year for 5 years

There is savings as a result of the extension of validity / expiry dates.

Update September 23 2016: There is an increase in license fee beginning October 1, 2016. This increase is already factored in our demo computation above.

To sum up,these are the new 2016 license fee for Non-Prof and Professional licenses based on the published notice of LTO in the Philippine Star dated September 23, 2016.
