3 Ways to Change SSS Status from Employed to Voluntary

More and more Filipinos are shifting from corporate work to work-from-home freelancing set-up. There are also lots of Filipinos who shifts from being an employee into becoming an entrepreneur or an OFW, how can these individuals change their Social Security System (SSS) coverage status from “Employed” to “Voluntary”?

iSensey shares a guide today.

An active SSS membership with regular contribution is important if you want to continue enjoying any of the funds’ benefits like access to Calamity Loan, Maternity Benefit, Sickness Benefit, among others. Thus, it is prudent that you convert your membership status from ‘employed’ to ‘voluntary’ if you have separated from your employment.

If you became a businessman or self- employed – change status to “Voluntary”.

If you became a freelancer – change status to “Voluntary”.

If you became an OFW – change status to “OFW”.

Not a member of SSS? Register for an SSS number via online right now.

Changing SSS Membership Status

There are 3 ways to convert SSS coverage status from employed to voluntary or employed to OFW status.

  1. Go visit an SSS branch and talk with one of their customer service representative. Bring your UMID. If you don’t have an UMID yet, make sure to bring any valid government ID.
  1. Download the SSS mobile app, generate a PRN. Pay this PRN before deadline, once paid and after 1 to 3 business days, you will see your status changed from “Employed” to “Voluntary Paying”.

See sample below. The PRN was generated May 13, 2020 when the member was still on ‘Employed’ status. The PRN was paid promptly. By May 15, 2020, our iSensey team member’s status now reflect his voluntary status.

Notice the line on the MySSS mobile app, it says there “After you have paid this Statement of Account, your Membership Type will be automatically change…”

This is the coverage type BEFORE and AFTER the PRN was paid:

3. Access your MySSS account using your desktop or laptop.  Go to the Generate PRN section, generate a PRN, pay it, wait a few days, and then the system will automatically adjust your status to Voluntary.

Option 2 and 3 are hassle-free ways of changing employment status on SSS. If you have internet and you are already registered to MySSS, then you can do this too conveniently, using your smartphone or using a desktop computer. Just generate a prn and pay it asap.

This process is also true for those who becomes OFW. But when you generate a PRN instead of choosing “Voluntary”, choose the “OFW” option.

For female members who need to change their SSS civil status from single to married, you really need to go to a branch to update your record. Bring your UMID or E-1 copy, also bring an NSO Marriage Certificate. You can also change your SSS beneficiary the same time you are changing your civil status.

There are also convenient ways to pay SSS contribution without leaving the house, and it is thru mobile wallets like Paymaya and Moneygment. iSensey will be sharing guides on how to pay contributions easily via mobile apps.

Pay your SSS monthly contributions so you will qualify for the various benefits.

Hi Amor, you can change your Employed status to Voluntary by visiting SSS and filing for change status or by generating a PRN and paying for it as discussed in this article.

You can process maternity if you meet the criteria for SSS Maternity Benefit Claim.
